Where temples and beaches create an irresistible combination!

Formerly known as Orissa, Odisha boasts of a very rich and distinctive cultural heritage. The state’s coastal plains have the highest concentration of religious and historical monuments, which have over the years, attracted a lot of tourists from all over the world. From wildlife reserves, beaches, temples, monuments along with a host of arts and festivals, this is one state that has a host of experiences to offer to every urban traveller.

One of the main star attractions of Odisha is Puri, which boasts of the famous Jagannath temple, which is from where the Rath Yatra takes place. Although this yatra takes places in many parts of the country today, the one that takes place in Puri is the oldest and attracts lakhs of devotees every year. Besides Puri, another major tourist destination in Odisha is Konark, that is located that near the coast and is the site for the 13th century Sun Temple, that is also called the Black Pagoda. Built during the reign of Narasimhadeva-I, it was built by using black granite. Although it is majorly in ruins, this temple is an incredible piece of craftsmanship and skill of the artisans of that period. A much sought after tourist place, the Sun temple is also a World Heritage Site, making it a must visit place, when you come to state.

Besides these major attractions, very few tourists take time to discover other parts of Orissa. In winter the small islands around Chilika Lake (a huge saltwater lagoon south of Bhubaneswar), become hotspots for avid birdwatchers. Further north, in the Bhitarkanika Sanctuary, a remote stretch of beach is the nesting site for rare olive ridley turtles. So whether you want to just relax by the beaches or go for a temple tour, Odisha has you sorted on all fronts.
