A harvest festival that is celebrated in Tamil Nadu every year

Pongal is a harvest festival, usually celebrated in Tamil Nadu. It is usually observed as a thanksgiving to God, the cattle, sun and earth. The word Pongal is derived from the word ‘ponga’ that normally means to boil and therefore Pongal means spillover or something that is overflowing. Commemorated across four days, the first day of Pongal is known as Bhogi, where people throw away or burn old household items and buy new ones. This is to signify the beginning of a new cycle. The next day is called Perum, which is the most important as devotees offer prayers to Lord Surya, to pay homage to the sun. All houses are decorated with special design called Kolam, which is drawn using rice flour and red clay. The third day is Mattu Pongal, when people pray to cattles for a better harvest. The final fourth day is called Kanum Pongal which people celebrate with picnics, dancing, gift exchange and buffalo taming.
