Mudumalai tours

Explore Mudumalai

A Nilgiri Delight!

Located in the north west side of the Nilgiri Hills of Tamil Nadu, Mudumalai offers a lot more than just a visit to its Wildlife Sanctuary, although the now declared Tiger Reserve still reserves its place as the top tourist attraction of the area.

Mudumalai Tiger Reserve - Spread over 321 square kilometres, the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve is located at the tri-junction of three states namely Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. It plays a unique role in being a part of the Nilgiris Biosphere Reserve, which is the first Biosphere Reserve in India. Along with Karnataka’s Bandipur and Nagarhole, Tamil Nadu’s Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve and Kerala’s Wayanad Reserve, Mudumalai forms an unbroken chain of reserves that is home to almost 570 tigers; the single largest tiger population in the world.

Nilgiri Mountain Railway - Two hours away from the resort is the Nilgiri Mountain Railway which is operated by Southern Railway. A UNESCO World Heritage site since 2005, there is only one toy train departure from here everyday. The entire route from Metupalaiyam to Udagamandalam in Ooty is spread over 46 kilometres and the train passes over almost 250 bridges {32 major ones} and 16 tunnels. This is a really picturesque route that will take you through incredible rocky terrains, tea plantations, ravines, rivers and forested hill. The most spectacular scenery and best views on this journey are situated along the stretch from Metupalaiyam to Coonoor, which is why many people prefer to take only this ride.

Dottabetta Peak Visit -  The highest peak in the Nilgiris Hill, the Doddabetta Peak Visit is just 10 kilometres from the Ooty bus stand. Located at the junction of the Eastern and Western Ghats, this resort offers some incredible views of the Nilgiri mountain ranges and is an excellent point to enjoy the sunsets. To reach the summit of Doddapetta peak, you have to trek for almost three kilometres, which will take you through rugged paths that eventually leads to open fields. The trek passes through long, grassy slopes that are lined with rows of ferns and sub-alpine herbs. Keep a lookout for colorful rhododendrons that surround the area.

Botanical Garden Visit - Located at the foot of the Doddabetta Mountain, the botanical garden is an expansive area that has some really beautiful displays of tropical flowers and an array of rare tree species. The present Botanical Gardens is divided into six sections that are called Lower Garden, New Garden, Italian Garden, Conservatory, Fountain Terrace and Nurseries. The gardens were initially established in the year 1848 by architect William Graham McIvor and has over years grown so much that it attracts visitors from all around the world. Today this garden is home to around thousands of species, including exotic and indigenous plants, shrubs, ferns, trees and bonsai plants. In the centre of the gardens is a fossilized tree trunk, that is said to be more 20 million years old.
