At Lonavala, you can spend your day admiring the panoramic viewpoints of the city, enjoying the local cuisine and perhaps trekking up a fort or into a cave. Equally charming and scenic, this place is rightly on top of lists for people who want to escape the urbane chaos of cities like Mumbai. Here are a few things that you can do in the city.

Explore Karla Caves: Carved into a rocky hillside, the Karla caves are among the oldest Buddhist cave shrines in India and if sources are to to be believed, these are just a few of the scores of caves, that are still to be unearthed in the Sahyadri Hills. Carved between the second century BC to the fifth century AD, these caves are also home to some stunning Chaityas {halls} and Viharas {monasteries} that are a reflection of the rich history and architecture of our country. Additionally, there is also a temple made of pillars from the Buddhist period that is located at the entrance of the cave.

According to ancient sources, the caves are of great importance to the Mahasamghika sect of Buddhism, before they even become relevant to Hinduism. The cave also has huge 15 metre pillar along the temple that is dedicated to Goddess Ekveera. Owing to its historical significance, the Archaeological Survey of India has now declared these caves to be a protected monument.

Trek up Lohagad Fort: A popular historic structure, the Lohagad Fort is perched on the top of an impressive hill near Malavali. Situated at a height of 3400 feet, this fort is a formidable fort that is an ideal destination for both nature lovers and trekkers. As the fort is surrounded by lush green grassland, it has really impressive views and automatically attracts a lot of people all year round.

Further, this fort is now connected by road, which means that it sees a lot of crowds, especially during the monsoon season.

Birding At Karnala Bird Sanctuary: The Karnala Bird Sanctuary is home to over 150 species of resident and 37 species of migratory birds, making it a haven for all types of nature enthusiasts. In the monsoon season, travellers will be able to spot some colourful species of birds such as the racket-tailed drongo, golden backed woodpecker and heart-spotted woodpecker. Also, winters see a whole range of migratory birds, making this park their home.

Besides the rich bird life, the sanctuary also comprises of moist deciduous forests, with  animals like wild boars, langur and rhesus monkeys commonly found here. Further, there are some interesting trails around the park, with the Hariyal Nature Trail being the simplest. Although it is only a kilometre, it offers a great bird sighting experience. If you want to extend your birding expedition, the Mortaka trail which is 6 km long is a good option.
