Marking the end of winter with a bonfire party!

A popular festival that is celebrated in North India, especially in Haryana, Punjab and Delhi, Lohri is celebrated by people of both Hindu and Sikh faith. Many people believe that this festival takes place to commemorate the passing of the winter solstice. Lohri is celebrated with a bonfire, which is an ancient tradition. The bonfire is lit in the evening at the main village square or outside the person’s home. Once the fire lit, people toss sesame seeds, gur, sugar candy and rewaries into it, sit around it and dance till the bonfire is finally extinguished. Some people perform prayers and go around it, which is done to pay respect to the natural element of fire. Further, during the Lohri day children go from door to door, singing folk songs and collecting sweets, savouries and money from the homes in their neighbourhoods. In homes that have newborns and newlyweds, the celebrations are quite special.
