From Dhokra to stone carvings, there is so much to discover here

Considered as a land of creative artisans and craftsmen, Odisha boasts of a very rich artistic tradition that has enjoyed the patronage of the noble/ruling classes for decades. Completely diverse and unique, the craft work of Orissa has continued to impress all the travellers who have visited their shores. Here is a list of just 5 impressive arts that are today an integral part of the culture of the state.

  1. Stone Carvings: Evident from the numerous archaeological monuments, sculptures and temples built centuries ago, art carvings in Odisha is truly spectacular. Perfected through centuries of disciplined efforts by generations of artisans, stone carvings from Orissa is currently practiced by artisans belonging to Puri, Bhubaneswar and Lalitgiri in the Cuttack district, though some carvings can be found in Khiching in the Mayurbhanj District as well. The art form primarily consists of custom carved works, with the Sun Temple of Konark and its intricate sculpture and delicate carvings on the red vivid sandstone exemplifying the practice.

  2. Pattachitra: A traditional art form of the state, Pattachitra is paintings based on Hindu mythology. Created on a special hand-made paper that is made from tamarind seeds, the paint used by artists is also natural and made from extracts of flowers and fruits. The colors are mixed in powdered shells from the sea and then the paste is used to create these paintings.Raghurajpur artists village in Puri is highly renowned for this art form.

  3. Silver Filigree: Another art form in Odisha that is truly ingenuine and unique is silver filigree that is called tarakshi in the local language. This craft was localised in Cuttack and the process consists of drawing silver through a series of consecutively smaller holes to produce fine strands of wire.

  4. Dhokra: A tribal craft, Dhokra combines metallurgical skills with wax technique to create items of distinctive beauty. Dating back to more than 4,000 years, Dhokra is still practised in some parts of Odisha. One of the earliest known lost wax artefacts is the dancing girl of Mohenjo-daro.The product created by dhokra artisans are in great demand, both in domestic and foreign markets because of primitive simplicity, enchanting folk motifs and forceful form.

  5. Paper Mache: Made from paper, natural fibres and waste cloth, paper mache is being practised by craftsmen from the state for many years. Masks, handbags, toys are produced out of specially made papers in Odisha that are not only beautiful but strong and durable as well.
