Dehradun tours

Explore Dehradun

A Garhwali Kaleidoscope!

The capital Uttarakhand, Dehradun has plenty on offer for tourists, travellers, and explorers. With the Garhwali town set on the foothills, the variety of tours are accessible to visitors.

Dehradun Zoo -  The Dehradun Zoo is extremely popular among both locales and tourists for its enchanting flora and fauna. Sprawling over 25 hectares, the zoo is right now home to a number of animals including two horned deers, leopards, ostrich, crocodiles and turtles. In addition, the zoo is also a favourite among bird-watchers, due to the presence of various bird species like parrot, peacock, parakeet, and macaw to name just a few. The park also has other facilities including a restroom, canteen, play area for kids and parking space. You can also a pack a picnic from the resort, which you can enjoy here while soaking in the splendour of nature.

Robbers Cave - One of the star attraction of Dehradhun is Robber’s Cave, which is a river cave formation that has been created inside a mountain, that is part of the Himalayan range. The cave is about 600 metres long, and is divided into two main parts.  As the name suggests, this place was once a hideout for stolen treasures, and truth be told, it still makes for a great adventure. It is exciting to feel your way around the rocks as you splash through the water in a place that has very little light. Just a word of caution: try not to go alone and be careful. Currently a popular tourist spot, this cave is now maintained by the state of Uttarakhand and there are local buses available up to ANarwala Village, post which you will have to trek for one kilometre.

Tapkeshwar Temple - A popular religious spot in Dehradun is the Tapkeshwar Temple (half an hour from the resort), that is also one of the most famous Shiva temple in the country. Situated near the forests, the main Shivalinga at the temple is located inside a natural cave, where water continuosly drips on it, making for a unique spectacle. Further, cool sulphur water springs are also located in the temple, where devotees have a bath before entering the main area. The Tapkeshwar Temple also has a very rich history attached to it, as according to local legends, Dronacharya (the teacher of the Pandavas) used to reside in the caves near the temple. This is why the caves are now called Drona Cave.

Forest Research Institute - Only half an hour from the resort, lies the Fort Research Institute or FRI which is the country’s leading and probably only institute that specialises in forest research. Established in 1906, this is one of the country’s oldest institute and was recognised as a university in 1991. Situated on a lush green campus, this institute was constructed by the British and is truly an architectural marvel as it combines elements of Greco-Roman and colonial architectural era. It is supposedly even bigger than the Buckingham Palace. The FRI today houses a number of laboratories, libraries and herbariums and museums including  the Pathology Museum, Social Forestry Museum, Silviculture Museum, Timbra Museum, Non-Wood Forest Products Museum and the Entomology Museum. You can also take part in the guided tours that operate from 9 AM to 1 PM and then from 2:30 PM to 5:30 PM. The FRI Museum is open from 9:30 AM to 5 PM everyday.
