Situated only 22 kms from Nainital, Bhimtal is a lake city that is blessed with some incredible vistas of both lakes and mountains. Popular for its mountains and lakes, the most popular attraction in this town is the Bhimtal Lake, which has a small island in the middle, that truly adds to its scenic charm. Add to this, the thick forests and pleasant weather, make this is incredible getaway, particularly for people in North India. Some things that you can do in Bhimtal include the following:

Bhimtal Lake - A popular spot in the town, the Bhimtal Lake is a popular tourist attraction, especially for its scenic surroundings. Spread over a huge area, this lake is also home to a rich variety of aquatic life and in winters, there are many migratory birds that visit this place, making it a favourite place for nature lovers.

The lake as well as the town is named after Bhima, one of the Pandavas of the Mahabharata, who is said to have travelled to this place during his time of exile. A dam was built on the lake in 1883, when the Kumaon region came under the British rule and Nainital was established as their summer capital. Some activities that you can undertake at this lake include boating, zorbing, kayaking and exploring an old temple that was built by Raja Baj Bahadur Chand, during the 17th century.

Adventure Activities - Bhimtal is an extremely popular and favourite adventure hub for all types of thrill seekers. Perfect for activities like trekking, paragliding, boating, cycling, mountain biking and even horse riding, there is something here for everyone.

If you like trekking, Bhimtal has a number of popular spots, perfect for both beginners and experienced trekking. There are two popular hiking routes in the area - the first is located 14 kms from Bhimtal and is located near Pine Riviera, while the second second route is near the Bhimtal lake that is surrounded by dense forests, perfect for a short trek. Paragliding is another adventure activity that you can enjoy at Naukuchiatal, just four kms from Bhimtal. Surrounded by green forests and lakes, this is a great way to enjoy the scenic surroundings of the region.

Love horse riding? Head to Bara Pathar, which is only 5 kms from Bhimtal, and has  some incredible trails for both amateurs and professionals. In addition, if you are new to horse riding, you will be accompanied by another horseman and if you are an expert, you can discover the locales on your own. Lastly, you can also hire a cycle to explore the nearby areas, giving you the freedom to  explore the region at your own pace.

Karkotaka Temple - Situated on top of the Karkota hills, this temple by the same name is quite popular among Hindu devotees. Devoted to the serpent god, Nag Karkota Maharaja, this temple sees a rise in devotees, especially during religious occasions like Rishi Panchami.

According to a local myth, it is said that the serpent god protects the villagers from snakes. Head here for the views of the surrounding areas as well.
