Baisakhi is a harvest festival that is extremely popular in Punjab and Haryana

A historical and religious festival for both Sikhs and Hindus, Baisakhi marks the time for harvest of Rabi crops. The festival of Baisakhi also marks a New Year for Sikh and also commemorates the formation of Khalsa panth of warriors under Guru Gobind Singh in the year 1699. The story behind Baisakhi festival began with the martyrdom of Guru Teg Bahadur, who was beheaded by Aurangzeb for refusing to convert to Islam. A joyous and colourful festival, Baisakhi is filled with merriment and celebrations, especially in the villages of Haryana and Punjab. Here there are many traditional folk performances, especially bhangra and gidda are enjoyed by both locals and tourists. Major celebrations for Baisakhi takes place at the Golden Temple in Amritsar.
