Punjab Arts

Arts in Punjab

The fashion capital for juttis and phulkari dupattas!

Located in North India, Punjab has a whole lot of things going right from it, including incredible monuments, delicious food and shops filled with some really spectacular products. For a crafts hunter, Punjab is a treasure chest unlike any other state, where almost each village has something unique and fun to delight shopaholics.

You know you have arrived in Patiala when you find bazaars filled to the brim with colourful jootis (from ₹400), parandi hair accessories (from ₹200), and pretty, hand-woven phulkari dupattas (from ₹1,000). Qila Bazaar, around the fort, is one of the city’s oldest markets and is predictably chaotic, colourful, and clamorous. Other items that reflect the strong artistic sense of the state includes metallic utensils, durries, folk toys, furniture and traditional ornaments.

Punjab is also home to some of  India’s most alluring abandoned forts, that are mostly hidden among their dusty bazaars. Head here to discover an era gone by, that have somehow even got lost in history books. These havelis boasts of some truly unique architectural elements of the walls and jharokhas can be admired. Also, it would be highly remiss of us if you do not mention the Golden Temple in Amritsar, which is one of the most humbling and serene sight in the country. While the street outside are chaotic and hyperactive, this sensory overload of sights, smells and sounds. If you have time, make your way to the recently opened Partition Museum, which is dedicated to documenting one of the biggest human migrations in human history, witnessed during the partition of India and Pakistan in 1947.
