Scenic expanse of the Great Rann of Kutch or the lush green views of the Satpura Hills, whatever may be the reason, Gujarat is always worth a trip. Just like other historic states of India, Gujarat has seen its share of invasions. Any invasion in the Indian territory adds to the usual norms of culture, society and of course architecture. This happened with Gujarat when the rule of the Sultans gave rise to the Indo-Saracenic style, the blend of Hindu and Islamic architecture. Mahabat Maqbara Palace in Junagadh is an example of this type of architecture.

Talking about architecture, Gujarat just like its neighbouring state Rajasthan has temples and forts. It also houses the modestly built but steeped in history - Sabarmati Ashram. This ashram has seen the execution of more freedom movements than any other structure in the entire country. Initially called the Satyagraha ashram, today one can find the quarters of Mahatma Gandhi preserved for tourists. His simple living style and how he gained activists for Swadeshi movements and civil disobedience movements is portrayed through an open-air museum in the ashram.

This state is not only historically important but holds importance in mythological tales of India as well. Dwarka in Gujarat used to be the home of Lord Krishna making it one of the important pilgrimage sites for Hindu devotees. The famous Dwarkadhish temple along with the Rukmini Devi temple makes for an interesting tour for pilgrims visiting Dwarka.

While Dwarka has its own mythological tale, Somnath temple is one of the 12 important Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva across the country. Known for its magnificent edifice, the temple has stood the test of time and earned the title of ‘Shrine Eternal’ for the same. It had been destroyed six times in the past and the present construction has been done in the Chalukya style of architecture. A trip to Gujarat can easily be your chance to witness the beautiful structures built to show our beliefs in almighty.

Apart from a temple tour in the state, one should not miss the vast Gir National Park, the sole home of the Asiatic lions. Get your dose of adrenaline rush here or head to Rann of Kutch to dwell on the fact that we are trivial beings in the entire universe.
