The best kind of therapy is beach therapy – Anonymous
Having lived in coastal cities all my life, visiting a city full of beaches is the best type of therapy for me. If you also share my views, watching the sunset while you sit on the white-powdery blanket of sand, where the waves come and tingle your feet might seem like the ultimate experience to de-stress.
If beach calms your mind, Goa is a paradise waiting for you. The city of beaches has something for every kind of traveller. Be it the happening nightlife or the amazing shacks offering the most delectable seafood, Goa never disappoints. Here are top 5 places to visit in North Goa:
Aguada Beach (and Aguada Fort)
While Aguada Beach itself is one of the top beaches in Goa, the Aguada Fort definitely deserves a visit. The beachs beauty is accentuated with the calmness and tranquility that takes over a person. Take those long strolls in the evening with the sun setting behind you and spend some quality time with your loved ones or yourself.
If strolls are not your thing, shop for knick-knacks at the beach-side shacks or indulge adrenaline-pumping water sports. Aguada beach is popular for all the right reasons and a visit to this serene beach is a must.
Keeping up with the trope of beaches in Goa, Baga offers a bustling and happening crowd for all those you love to socialise with and meet new people on their trips. A usual sight at the beach, any day, would be the long line of shacks which overlook the long lines of motorboats. These motorboats are often attached to paragliders. Spend your time checking out all the unique stuff at the shacks or collect some seashells (we still dig this) in the day because the beach sees a different mood and vibe at the night.
With people swaying to mostly trance music, drinking beer (often times very cheap) or just sitting in the different restaurants or cafes, the beach comes alive in its own exhilarating way.
If forts and palaces steeped in history are your thing, the Chapora Fort should definitely be on your itinerary. A structure and relic of the past, this fort was built in the year 1617 to protect the border from invasions. Time took its toll and today it lies in ruins, still as beautiful as it was back in the 16th century. Travel back in time by visiting this fort and do stop to take in the views of Vagator and the Anjuna beach from the vantage point of the fort.
Also, this place is perfect for clicking those Instagram and Facebook-worthy pics with the blue ocean right behind you.
Anjuna Flea Market
The Goa Carnival takes place in the month of February every year. If travelling to Goa to watch this beautiful cornucopia of colours and culture is out of question for you, head to Anjuna Flea Market in any month of the year. The market is held on every Wednesday and is a small carnival in itself.
Forage the market for fashionable pieces of clothing, junk jewellery and a plethora of souvenirs you could take back home. The long line of shops offers something for every kind of shopper. Moreover, the market is open till late at night and it also has some of the best shacks where you can gorge on delicious seafood.
The Church of our Lady of Immaculate Conception
Appreciating and understanding fine architecture and all those intricate carvings by artisans of 16th century is an interesting activity in itself. If you take pride in being one of those people who have an eye for beautiful architecture, The Church of our Lady of Immaculate Conception should be on your places to tick off before returning from Goa.
Touted as one of the first churches of Goa, it was built in the year 1541. Known for heavy ornamentation, interesting and eye-catching carvings with a simple style of architecture, this may not be one of the mainstream churches of Goa, but is sure a popular one in North Goa.
