Janardhana Swamy Temple
This is a 2000-year old Vishnu temple and a famous tourist spot. Its spectacular architecture attracts travelers from all over the world. Non-Hindus are not allowed inside the main shrine but can hang around the temple area. Janardhana Swamy temple is also famous for the festival known as “Arattu” which falls in the month of March or April.
Sivagiri Mutt is the headquarters of one of Kerala’s most important guru Shri Narayana Dharma. While the famed religious leader is no more now, his followers are devoted to his preachings of One Caste, One Religion, One God, and this Mutt is an important center for its propagation. Every year between 30th December to 1st January Sivagiri Pilgrimage is conducted; during that period thousands of devotees visit the place.
While it is still a bit underrated, the Anjengo or Anchuthengu Fort is easily one of the prime attraction of Varkala. The fort, whose name means “Five Coconut trees” in Malayalam, is 12km away from Varkala in a town of the same name as the fort. Constructed between 17th and 18th centuries by the British East India Company, the fort is now under National Heritage monuments. As you enter the elaborately built fort you can see old structures like the barracks and a cemetery in the fort shelter. Those who love walking should not forget to explore Anjengo fort.
1okm away from the main town, the Varkala Beach is also known as Papanasam Beach which means “”Destroyer of sins”. This beach is a popular tourist spot with spectacular beauty, complete with great views of the Arabian Sea and a beautiful green cliff adjacent to it. Occasionally, you can also spot dolphins here. While the place is alive with restaurants, shops and beach shacks, it is also a heaven for seafood lovers. There are many eating joints nearby which offer great seafood at affordable prices, attracting tons of foreign travellers here.
