Two natural caves located near Edakkal, 25 km from Wayanad, Edakkal caves are famous for their cave paintings which are believed to date at least 8000 years back. Although they’ve mistyfied travellers for ages, being the only such specimen in South India, the place is also known for the trek that leads there. A 45 minutes trek from a place called Ambukutty Mala takes you to the prehistoric caves. A visit here is a good mix of adventure and sightseeing.
The highest peak in Wayanad, Chamber peak should be on the to-do list of all trekking enthusiasts. The trek is made more interesting by the lush green forest cover on the slopes and the tea gardens around the mountain.

An integral part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary is spread over an area of 350 sq. km. and is one of the most underrated sanctuaries in South India. A Protect Elephant reserve, it is a hub of wildlife, best known for its large animal species like deer, wild bear, elephant, tiger, and cheetah, among others. Unique wildlife safaris like elephant safari and jeep safari are provided here under the guidance of the forest department.
