How about adding a royal touch to your romantic story this Valentines Day? Sitting by rustic stepwells, chatting endlessly by the pool while gazing at the stars, spending your day exploring a 500-year-old royal castle When looking for places near Kumbhalgarh, you may not find a mention of Ghanerao easily, and that is exactly what makes this quiet village near Udaipur a truly beautiful offbeat location in Rajasthan. Visit Ghanerao when you want to escape the city noise, when the traveller in you yearns for an offbeat experience, or when you just want some moments with your partner or with yourself away from the maddening city rush.
The royal castle in conversation is a marble and stone structure, serving home to the Mertiya Rathores – the royal family still residing in the now-turned-resort. However, what sets this royal castle in Ghanerao from other heritage hotels and resorts in Rajasthan is that out of the 15 rooms on offer, no two rooms are identical. Aesthetically-decorated with royal portraits, vintage wooden furniture, and jharokha-style constructions, the rooms are an easy vehicle to travel to the bygone era.
In the castle is a marble-carved Badi Mahal, a regally-done dining area, large courtyards with quiet seating areas, royal artefacts, and a beautiful blue swimming pool offering an unmatched poolside candlelight dinner experience, complete with lamps, stars, and gorgeous Rajasthani food.
And when you are done exploring the heritage property, step out of your suite and explore the village outside. Had Ghanerao not been an offbeat destination, it would have been effortlessly recognised as the creative capital of the region. The area has artisan villages around, where you can meet several artists or even try your hands at various arts. Do pottery, learn shoe-making, buy lots of handicrafts. Talk to locals, sample local
Rajasthani delicacies, click lots of pictures.
Or just sit with your partner by the step-wells talking about the things relevant and irrelevant. There, you can easily spend hours without being interrupted or disturbed by flocking tourists. And if you are in a mood to take a drive, Kumbhalgarh Fort is only over an hour away.
