The Pench National Park is located on the southern boundary of Madhya Pradesh and is named after the Pench river, which flows through the park from north to south. Nestled in the lower southern reaches of the Satpuda Hills, this reserve is spread over 758 square kilometres, out of which a core area of 299 square kilometres comprises of Indira Priyadarshini Pench Park and the Mowgli Pench Sanctuary and the remaining 464 square kilometres is the buffer area of the park.
That’s not all. The tiger reserve has a very rich history, with it being declared a sanctuary in 1977 which was raised to the status of a national park in 1983 and a tiger reserve in 1992. In 2011, it also won the Best Management Award as well. Interestingly, this park and its neighborhood is the original setting of The Jungle Book, one of Rudyard Kipling most iconic work. What’s more is that once you are done with the safaris, fret not because we have a host of activities that you can do in and around Pench, besides just safaris.

Drive through NH-7 on either side of the highway, and you will see some incredible landscapes of deciduous teak trees, paddy fields and a cluster of potter community creating some incredible works on their wheels. Inhabited by more than 100 families, the Pachdhar village is native to the traditional potter community, who are locally known as Kumhaars.

That’s not all, you can even watch these products being created right in front of your eyes. The process of production is typically organic comprising of mostly natural ingredients, eventually hand-made and shaped – with no mechanical excesses. The basic raw material, black soil is procured in tractors from fields nearby. Till recently, potters would excavate fertile soil from the river banks in the vicinity, but the process ceased once that area came under the purview of Pench National Park and its forest reserves.
Go Boating Near The Pench Reservoir
Also called Kamthikhairy Dam, Pench Dam is an earth-fill dam on the Pench river. Situated deep within the Pench National Park, most of the wildlife is found around this water-body, as many animals visit the dam to quench their thirst. During summer however, the Pench River dries out leaving behind small pools of water here-and-there that are locally known as ‘doh’ or ‘khassa’.
The Pench Reservoir at the centre of this National Park is the only major water source here.
